Business
Glencore plc is one of the world's largest diversified natural resource companies and a major producer and marketer of more than 60 commodities that advance everyday life, including metals and minerals such as copper, cobalt, nickel, zinc, lead, ferroalloys, iron ore, aluminium and other metals; energy products encompassing thermal coal, steelmaking coal and oil; as well as agricultural products. Founded in 1974 as Marc Rich + Co AG and headquartered in Baar, Switzerland, with its registered office in Saint Helier, Jersey, and oil and gas headquarters in London, the company operates through two primary segments--industrial activities focused on mining, production and processing, and marketing activities involving trading, logistics, financing and other services--across more than 35 countries with approximately 150,000 employees and contractors serving industrial consumers in the automotive, steel, power generation, battery manufacturing and oil sectors. In July 2024, Glencore completed its C$9 billion acquisition of Elk Valley Resources from Teck Resources, bolstering its position as a leading diversified miner and supplier of critical minerals in Canada, and in August 2024 decided to retain its thermal coal business rather than spin it off, citing enhanced cash generation; the company has also expressed openness to value-accretive mergers and acquisitions, including potential discussions with Rio Tinto, and entered a strategic partnership with US Strategic Metals and Chilean Cobalt Corp. in 2024 for downstream processing of cobalt and copper intermediates to support US critical minerals supply chains.
